Dr. Mike Browder Announces Plans to Retire from BTES in 2022

After more than 49 years of service to the employees and customers of Bristol Tennessee Essential Services (BTES), Dr. R. Michael Browder formally announced his retirement to the Board of Directors on Friday, October 22. Browder submitted his one-year notice of retirement with plans to retire on December 31, 2022.

“I am proud to have served this community during my tenure at BTES,” said Browder. “Many accomplishments and awards have been received during my time at BTES that are directly related to BTES’ key success factors of safety, reliability and financial which include an impeccable safety record, consistently improving system reliability, lowering the rates to one of the lowest in the Tennessee Valley, and secure financials to ensure continued operations for a successful future.”

Browder began his career at BTES in 1972 and has been CEO of the organization since 1977. He holds a Doctorate of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis from East Tennessee State University (ETSU), a Master of Administrative Science degree from the University of Alabama Huntsville, and a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering Degree from Auburn University. He is a registered Professional Engineer in both Tennessee and Alabama.

Browder continued, “Another of my accomplishments that I am most proud of is the development of many employees, who have grown into well respected leaders at BTES, in Bristol, and its surrounding communities. All of these accomplishments were made possible by the support and advisement of a confident and effective Board of Directors.”

Under Browder’s leadership, BTES expanded its product offerings in 2005 to add Internet, telephone, and cable television services and now offers the fastest Internet available in the United States with 10 Gigabits of service available to its customers.

“I appreciate the time and support exhibited by the Board of Directors, the City of Bristol and the City of Bristol, TN City Council,” said Browder. “We live in an area that we should all be very proud to call home.”

The BTES Board of Directors will begin its search for a new Chief Executive Officer with plans for a smooth and successful transition.
